Measuring the Friction on Pavement

Airplanes and automobiles depend on tire friction with runways and roads. This
friction prevents planes and automobiles from sliding and skidding, especially in
wet conditions.

Over time, pavement skid resistance deteriorates due to weathering, usage, aging, and contaminants. The most persistent contaminant is rubber deposits from jet aircraft landing gear tires. Heavy rubber deposits can completely obscure the pavement surface texture, reducing aircraft braking performance and directional control, particularly when runways are wet.
